Wanting something simple but delicious for breakfast one morning whilst at Bellbird recently, we paid a visit to the Award-winning family owned & run busines of Wollombi Road Providore at Cessnock, as I had passed this store numerous times whilst visiting the Hunter Valley. Having decided on a grain sourdough I found a jar of their freshly made strawberry jam to go with it and wanting something additional, took up the owner’s suggestion of some plum jam. Wow! Both delicious with lots of fruit but the latter had that bite that I adore. We could have just kept eating but caught ourselves. (editor- Must watch our trim figures you know! Ha, that ship has sailed long ago)

We got to talking to the owner Michael Jenness who told us that he & his partner Lisa Cussen started the business 6 years ago after wanting to get back into something more substantial & regular as maintenance can be a bit sporadic sometimes. His background having been in a restaurant, a hotel & maintenance, all successful businesses, while Lisa is from jewellery, and window dressing. She hinted that she would love to have her own jewellery designs in the shop one day.

Fruit & veg was totally out of their comfort zones but giving it a go is the Australian way. So, they embarked on opening the business after both agreeing that there was a need for something different in the area.

The shop had always been a fruit & veg shop over the years, with a few different owners, however the last person before them closed the business so the building was vacant for about 18 months. The space was right & all the boxes ticked which suited their needs for a business.

They decided that they wanted to take to it to a whole different level with the fruit & veg shop by sourcing the best of locally grown produce & thus this focus became their driving force there by making it into the popular award-winning business that it is today.

The drive to succeed won them the Sydney Markets 2018 Fresh Awards in the “Service Excellence” category which is judged anonymously. A win well deserved as a recognition of the outstanding old fashioned friendly customer service from the owners & staff alike. The great thing is they all love being there & it clearly shows.

There are a range of floral arrangements & gift basket on hand or can be made up to suit the occasion, along with delicious fruit platters & salads, all freshly made. They can supply breakfast packs, BBQ hampers amongst other things & are starting to cater for Air BnB’s food needs, in the area. The shop also carries breads, jams, cheeses, home cooked meals, that are heat & eat. Steaks, sausages, an organic line meal, soups, stir fry. In fact, why not give them a call & discuss your small catering needs.

People can order online or from their website & if it is placed before 10.00am there is same day pickup for goods ordered.

If you are in the area you must definitely visit this fascinating family-owned business with good old-fashioned friendliness & service for a huge range of fresh seasonal fruit and veggies, local breads, cheeses, olives, honey, gluten free products and many other tantalising delicavies. We guarantee that you won’t be disappointed.

Thank you, Michael & Lisa, for permission to use your photos, as we had left the area and couldn’t take our own, but we will be back soon.
